Doing the right thing: Reflections from the IGD Future of Food Event Panel on Food Waste

17 November 2025

2 Sisters Food Group’s Food Systems and Sustainability Director, Jude Irons, recently attended the IGD Future of Food Event

Jude joined a panel to discuss the journey of 2 Sisters in supporting Alliance Food Sourcing (AFS) and the Coronation Food Project

The event provided a unique platform to share experiences and highlight the impact senior leadership can have in driving meaningful change within the food industry.

Jude said: “When Ranjit Singh, President BHL, was approached to get involved with the AFS, he saw it as an opportunity to give back. By donating surplus food, 2 Sisters are not only helping others but also encouraging businesses to rethink their waste streams and respond to seasonal fluctuations in demand.

Every food manufacturer, regardless of size, has waste ingredients or finished products and there are times when spare production capacity can be put to good use. The excess can be redirected to support those who might otherwise face difficult choices to feed themselves or their families.

Direct engagement with CEOs can unlock opportunities and is essential for swift action. Last Christmas, 2 Sisters aimed to donate 100,000 Christmas meals to those in need. We had the turkey and vegetables, but no gravy. Calls to other food manufacturers secured the gravy and brought Christmas puddings on board. In just three phone calls, the support was agreed, and the meals were delivered

The collaboration from our suppliers was extraordinary - they wanted to play their part too. If everyone contributes, collectively we can make a significant difference.

Our ambition to donate 5 million equivalent meals is woven into our organisational plans and communicated widely. The pride our colleagues feel in being part of this initiative is palpable and priceless, the true motivation is simply that it’s the right thing to do. A small change - diverting products from waste to donation - has led to positive outcomes for our business, our colleagues, and the wider community.

The IGD Future of Food Event reinforced the importance of leadership, collaboration, and a shared commitment to making a difference. By acting decisively and involving everyone, we can turn surplus into support and create lasting positive change. The message I left the audience with was just to do something. We all have surplus – product, ingredients, capacity, time at some point in our operations. We can all do something to put this to better use, to do the right thing.
