200,000 meals to food redistribution charity

27 December 2017

2 Sisters Food Group has been working with the UK’s largest food redistribution charity; FareShare, to help tackle hunger this Christmas. The company donated over 200,000 meals’ worth of food to people who are vulnerable or in need.

This amounted to 84 tonnes of food; weighing as much as 30 African elephants! And included: cranberry sauce, carrots, peas, potatoes, Christmas puddings and turkey.

The donation will allow FareShare to feed over 200,000 people at Christmas dinners being hosted over the next two weeks and into the New Year through their network of charity partners. The charities include homeless shelters, lunch clubs for older people at risk of social isolation and community centres in deprived areas.

Not only does the food provide a much-needed nutritious meal, but it also helps build a support network for those who may otherwise have been alone during this festive period.  One FareShare food recipient stated: “Good food gives you energy and lifts your mood. It’s a tremendous boost for people in tough times.”

2 Sisters Food Group would like to give special thanks to Bernard Matthews, Rick Beswick, MRCT and NFT for their support and assistance in organising the donation.

The food donation is in addition to 2 Sisters’ contribution to the Tesco Food Collection project which saw colleagues collect over 8,400 meals’ worth of food in partnership with the Trussell Trust and FareShare.

Alyson Walsh, FareShare commercial director, said: “The Christmas Food Collection really helps us in our work to provide good food to thousands of amazing front-line organisations in the UK, which support people who are struggling to feed themselves. Every single item of food donated - alongside the fresh food we already receive - will make a difference, so thank you to everyone who volunteered your time.”
